Lymphedema

Lymphedema is an accumulation of lymph fluid in the soft tissues, most frequently in the arms or legs. Lymph fluid, rich in protein, is normally filtered by the lymph nodes and is then released into the bloodstream. When the nodes are obstructed, their filtering capacity is overwhelmed and lymph fluid collects and causes swelling.

Causes of primary lymphedema is due to the failed development of the lymph nodes and/or blood vessels. This condition affects mainly women. Secondary lymphedema is usually due to surgical removal, injury or destruction of lymph nodes/blood vessels. This condition is often localized to the specific limb affected by the absent or injured lymph nodes.

USUALLY CHRONIC, BUT GENERALLY CAN BE CONTROLLED

Lymphedema is usually a chronic condition. Untreated, lymphedema can lead to irreversible skin changes, frequent infections, reduced mobility of the affected limb and diminished quality of life.

What are the Symptoms of Lymphedema?

Symptoms of Lymphedema include swelling, heaviness, tightness and itching. In advanced stages of lymphedema, recurrent skin infections, hardening and thickening of the skin may also be present.

Treatments

Elevation and compression garments are the first line of treatment for lymphedema. Depending on the other symptoms present, such as skin thickening and hardening, reduction and maintenance therapy may be necessary.
