Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment used to treat spider veins and varicose veins that contribute to symptoms related to chronic venous insufficiency, including leg aching, burning, swelling, and heaviness.

During sclerotherapy, a specialized medication is injected directly into the affected vein. The solution irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to collapse and seal shut. Over time, the treated vein is naturally absorbed by the body, and blood flow is redirected to healthier veins.

Sclerotherapy is performed in the office setting and typically takes 15–30 minutes depending on the number of veins being treated.

Sclerotherapy Procedure

The procedure is performed without the need for anesthesia.

Using a very fine needle, the sclerosant solution is injected directly into the targeted veins. Multiple veins can be treated during a single session.

After injection, gentle compression may be applied to promote vein closure. Compression stockings are often recommended for a short period following treatment to optimize results and reduce swelling.

The treated veins gradually fade over several weeks as the body absorbs them.

Conditions Treated with Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is commonly recommended for:

  • Spider veins (telangiectasias)

  • Small varicose veins

  • Residual veins following vein ablation

  • Cosmetic vein concerns

  • Mild symptoms of venous insufficiency

Benefits of Sclerotherapy

  • Minimally invasive treatment

  • No surgery required

  • Quick in-office procedure

  • Minimal downtime

  • Improvement in symptoms such as burning, itching, or leg heaviness

Multiple treatment sessions may be needed depending on the number and size of veins.

What to Expect After the Procedure

Patients typically resume normal activities immediately after treatment. Walking is encouraged to promote circulation.

Mild bruising, redness, or temporary discoloration at injection sites may occur. Compression stockings may be recommended for several days following treatment.

Results improve gradually over several weeks.

When is Sclerotherapy Recommended?

Your vascular specialist may recommend sclerotherapy if you experience:

  • Visible spider veins

  • Burning or aching from small varicose veins

  • Persistent minor venous symptoms

Sclerotherapy is often combined with other vein treatments such as Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) or VenaSeal™ for comprehensive vein care.
