VenaSeal™ is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment used to treat chronic venous insufficiency and symptomatic varicose veins caused by venous reflux. Venous reflux occurs when damaged vein valves allow blood to flow backward and pool in the legs, leading to leg swelling, heaviness, aching, skin discoloration, and in advanced cases, venous ulcers.
The VenaSeal™ Closure System uses a specially formulated medical adhesive to permanently seal diseased veins. Once the vein is closed, blood is naturally redirected to healthy veins, improving circulation and relieving symptoms.
VenaSeal™ is performed in the office setting and does not require thermal energy (heat), tumescent anesthesia, or multiple needle injections along the vein.
VenaSeal™ Procedure
The VenaSeal™ procedure is performed under ultrasound guidance using local anesthesia at the access site.
The procedure begins with a small needle insertion into the affected vein, commonly the great saphenous vein (GSV) or small saphenous vein (SSV). A thin catheter is then guided into position within the diseased vein.
Through this catheter, small amounts of medical adhesive are delivered along the length of the vein. Gentle pressure is applied externally to help seal the vein walls together. The adhesive closes the vein immediately.
Over time, the body reroutes blood flow to healthy veins and naturally absorbs the treated vein.
Because VenaSeal™ does not use heat, there is less risk of nerve irritation and typically less post-procedure discomfort compared to thermal ablation procedures.
Conditions Treated with VenaSeal™
VenaSeal™ is commonly recommended for patients with:
-
Chronic venous insufficiency
-
Symptomatic varicose veins
-
Venous reflux confirmed by duplex ultrasound
-
Leg heaviness or fatigue
-
Persistent leg swelling
-
Skin discoloration near the ankles
-
Venous stasis dermatitis
-
Venous ulcers
Benefits of VenaSeal™
-
Minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment
-
No thermal energy required
-
No need for multiple tumescent anesthesia injections
-
Typically no requirement for compression stockings after the procedure*
-
Minimal discomfort
-
Quick return to normal activities
-
Excellent long-term vein closure rates
(*Compression recommendations may vary depending on your individual case.)
What to Expect After the Procedure
Most patients resume normal activities immediately after the procedure. Walking is encouraged to promote healthy circulation.
Mild tenderness or a sensation of tightness along the treated vein may occur temporarily. Bruising is generally minimal.
A follow-up ultrasound is typically scheduled to confirm successful vein closure.
When is VenaSeal™ Recommended?
Your vascular specialist may recommend VenaSeal™ if you experience:
-
Ongoing leg swelling
-
Aching, throbbing, or heaviness in the legs
-
Visible varicose veins
-
Skin discoloration or irritation around the ankles
-
Non-healing venous ulcers
-
Symptoms that persist despite conservative management
Early treatment of venous reflux can prevent progression of chronic venous disease and improve overall quality of life.
